How to connect your own domain to your website — in plain words
What a domain is, where to buy one, and the two settings that point it to your website. No jargon — with examples for common Swedish and international providers.

Your website is built and online with a temporary address. Now you want it on yourbusiness.com. This is the part that scares people — but it's really just two lines in a settings page.
What a domain is (and isn't)
A domain is your address, like mybakery.se. You rent it, usually per year, from a domain provider. Your website lives somewhere else. Connecting them means telling the domain where the website lives — like forwarding your mail to a new address.
Step 1: Get a domain (if you don't have one)
- Pick something short and easy to spell: your business name, perhaps plus your town.
- For a Swedish business, .se is a natural choice; .com works everywhere.
- Buy it from a provider such as Loopia, One.com, Binero, GoDaddy or Namecheap. You only need the domain — you don't need their hosting or website builder.
Step 2: Find the DNS settings
Log in to your domain provider and find the page called DNS, DNS settings, Manage DNS or Zone editor. That's the domain's address book.
Step 3: Add the two lines
Your website service tells you exactly what to add. With Coder Bob it looks like this (Bob shows you your own values in the chat):
Type: A Name: @ Value: 75.2.60.5
Type: CNAME Name: www Value: (the address Bob shows you)- A record with name @ means “the domain itself” (mybakery.se).
- CNAME with name www means “the www version” (www.mybakery.se).
- If there are already A or CNAME records with the same names, change them instead of adding new ones.
Step 4: Wait a little — then check
Changes can take from a few minutes up to a day to spread. Then your site opens on your domain, and the padlock (https) is switched on automatically. In Bob's chat, just ask “does my domain work yet?”.
If it doesn't work
- Check for typos — especially in the value.
- Make sure there's only one A record for @ (remove the old one).
- Some providers want the name field empty instead of @ — try that.
- Still stuck? Your domain provider's support can add the two lines for you in a minute.
Questions and answers
- What is a domain?
- Your address on the internet, like yourbusiness.com. You rent it yearly from a domain provider such as Loopia, One.com, GoDaddy or Namecheap.
- What are DNS settings?
- The address book for your domain. It tells the internet which computer your website lives on. Connecting a domain means adding two lines to it.
- How long does it take before my domain works?
- Often minutes, sometimes up to a day — the change has to spread across the internet. After that, the padlock (https) is switched on automatically.
