Does a small business still need a website?
Instagram and a Google profile aren't enough on their own. Why your own website still matters — for Google, for AI assistants like ChatGPT, and for trust.

Many small businesses today live on Instagram, Facebook and a Google Business Profile — and wonder if a website is still worth it. The short answer: yes, more than ever. But it doesn't need to be big, expensive or complicated.
1. Customers check you before they come
Whether they found you on Instagram, through a friend or on a map, most people look you up before they book, buy or visit. A clear website answers the questions that decide it: what do you offer, what does it cost, where are you, when are you open, how do I book? If they can't find those answers in a few seconds, many simply pick someone else.
2. Google — and now AI — need something to read
Google shows websites first. And more and more people ask ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini for recommendations — “a good hairdresser near Södermalm?”. These assistants read websites to answer. Social media pages are often hard for them to read; your own website isn't. No website, and you're easy to miss.
3. You own it
Platforms change their rules, their reach and their look all the time. Accounts get hacked or blocked. Your website is the one place on the internet that's fully yours — with your own domain, like yourbusiness.com, that you can put on cards, signs and in every email.
4. It works while you sleep
A good website answers the same questions you get on the phone: prices, opening hours, directions, “do you have gluten-free?”. Every answer on the site is a call or message you don't have to take.
What it actually needs
Most small businesses need far less than they think:
- A home page that says clearly what you do, for whom and where
- Your services or products — with prices if you can
- A few real photos of your work, place or team
- How to contact or book you, opening hours and where to find you
- A site that's fast and easy to use on a phone
That's 3–5 pages. Read more in what makes a good small business website.

Questions and answers
- Isn't a Facebook or Instagram page enough?
- Social pages are great for being seen, but you don't own them, they're hard to find on Google, and AI assistants rarely use them. A website is the one place you control that everything else can point to.
- How much does a website for a small business cost?
- It ranges from free website builders you set up yourself to agency projects costing tens of thousands. Tools like Coder Bob sit in between: you chat, he builds it, and you pay a monthly plan.
- What should a small business website have?
- What you do and for whom, where you are, how to contact or book you, prices or a menu if relevant, a few real photos, and it must work well on a phone.
