Step-by-step: get a new website without knowing anything about websites
A plain-language guide for business owners: gather your content, choose a look, check it on your phone, put it online and connect your own domain.

You don't need to learn web design to get a good website. You need to know your business — which you do. Follow these steps.
Step 1: Gather what you already have
- Your current website, if you have one — even an old one. It's full of useful text.
- Other places you're online: Facebook page, Instagram, a booking page, a menu PDF.
- 5–10 good photos of your work, place, products or team. Phone photos in daylight are fine.
- The facts: services and prices, opening hours, address, phone, e-mail.
- Your logo, if you have one.
Step 2: Decide what the site should do
One main goal: get bookings, phone calls, visits to the shop or online orders? Every page should lead there. Then list the pages — usually Home, Services (or Menu/Products), About, Contact.
Step 3: Pick a look
Find one or two websites whose look you like — not necessarily in your industry. Clean and modern? Warm and cosy? Bold and colourful? Elegant? Keep your own colours if you have them. Showing an example is the fastest way to explain what you want.
Step 4: Check it like a customer
Open the site on your phone and ask yourself:
- Can I tell in five seconds what this business does?
- Can I find prices, opening hours and how to book or call?
- Are the facts right — prices, address, phone?
- Do the photos show what customers really get?
Ask a friend to do the same. Then change what's not right — with Bob, just say it: “make the prices bigger”, “add our Sunday hours”, “use the photo of the shop at the top”.
Step 5: Put it online
Publishing means your site gets an address anyone can visit. With Bob it's one button — “Go live” — and you get a link straight away.
Step 6: Connect your own domain
A domain is your address on the internet, like yourbusiness.com. If you don't have one, buy it from a domain provider (it usually costs a little per year). Then point it to your new site — it sounds technical, but it's two settings. Our domain guide explains it in plain words.
Step 7: Tell the world
- Put the address on your Google Business Profile, Instagram and Facebook bios.
- Add it to your e-mail signature, cards and signs.
- Ask SEO Joe to check that Google and ChatGPT can find it.
